DAY 1 - BARCELONA - PANTA DE SAU - RUPIT
Panta de Sau is a beautiful dammed lake surrounded by mountains and at its heart a lone church steeple poking out of the water. This is in fact the only evidence for the village that used to be located here, which was completely inundated after Franco’s decision to build a dam in this place.
Rupit is a magical medieval village, located on the Collsacabra range, about one hour´s drive from Barcelona. The church and fortress in the town were built at the end of the 10th century. The village attracts many tourists due to its typical medieval appearance – stone houses, flowery windowsills, and winding streets and alleyways paved with the natural bedrock. Visitors can stroll around the village and take a short excursion to the cliffs in the outskirts of town, where the famous Salt de Sallent waterfall can be witnessed. A hanging bridge leads to the center of the town where a visit feels like time-travel, with the walls of many houses advertising in carved stone the years in which they were built. Most are from the 16th and 17th centuries.
La Garrotxa is a natural park in a wide volcanic area, and holds about 40 inactive volcanoes. The last eruption happened roughly 11 thousand years ago but nevertheless, the region is still seismically active, and the last major earthquake in 1428 caused major destruction. The park is quite large, and completely engulfs a number of towns. For many years, the authorities have been trying to balance the desire to develop the area touristically, and the protection of the environment, a thing which led to the declaration of many parts of the park as Natural Reserves.
